Marco Rubio
Marco Antonio Rubio is an American politician, attorney, and diplomat born on May 28, 1971, in Miami, Florida, to Cuban immigrant parents who came to the U.S. in the 1950s. After attending the University of Florida for his bachelor's degree (1993) and the University of Miami School of Law for his Juris Doctor (1996), Rubio began his political career as a West Miami City Commissioner. He then served in the Florida House of Representatives from 2000 to 2008, where he rapidly rose through the ranks to become the Speaker of the Florida House from 2006 to 2008, becoming the first Cuban-American to hold the position. In 2010, Rubio was elected to the U.S. Senate, where he served for three terms (2011–2025), becoming known as a policy-oriented Republican with a strong focus on foreign policy, especially regarding China and Latin America, and for his early involvement in the bipartisan "Gang of Eight" immigration reform effort. He also ran an unsuccessful campaign for the Republican nomination for President in 2016. Following the 2024 election, Rubio was nominated by President Donald Trump and unanimously confirmed by the Senate to serve as the 72nd United States Secretary of State, assuming office in January 2025, a role in which he became the highest-ranking Hispanic American official in U.S. history.
