María Florencia Botto Rota is an Argentine-Spanish actress, writer, and director, born on February 10, 1974, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She belongs to a prominent artistic family; her mother is the renowned acting coach Cristina Rota, and her brother is actor Juan Diego Botto. Following the dictatorship in Argentina, María moved with her family to Spain in 1978, where she grew up and began her acting career at the age of ten with her feature film debut in Los motivos de Berta (1984). Botto is highly regarded in Spanish cinema, having received two Goya Award nominations: one for Best New Actress for Celos (1999) and another for Best Supporting Actress for Soldados de Salamina (Soldiers of Salamina, 2003). Her work often involves complex, character-driven roles in both film and television. She has successfully crossed over into English-language productions, notably starring as Mary Magdalene in the American biblical drama 'Risen' (2016), and playing a recurring role in the TNT drama series 'Good Behavior' (2016–2017), where she notably portrayed Ava Pereira, the sister of her real-life brother Juan Diego Botto's character, Javier. More recently, she has appeared in the Adam Sandler Netflix film 'Hustle' (2022) and the Spanish Christmas comedy 'The Night My Dad Saved Christmas' (2023), with a sequel announced for 2025.
