Mark Harmon, born Thomas Mark Harmon on September 2, 1951, in Burbank, California, is a celebrated American actor, producer, and former college football quarterback. The son of football legend Tom Harmon and actress Elyse Knox, he grew up in a showbiz-athletic household and went on to play quarterback for UCLA before shifting to acting in the 1970s. Harmon first gained major attention with his role as Dr. Robert Caldwell on St. Elsewhere in the 1980s and was named People magazine’s "Sexiest Man Alive" in 1986. He appeared in numerous TV series and films, including Summer School, Wyatt Earp, and Freaky Friday. His most iconic role came in 2003 when he began portraying Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs on NCIS, a role he played for 18 seasons and over 400 episodes. Harmon also served as producer and executive producer for the show, helping to shape it into one of television’s top-rated dramas. Since stepping away from the show in 2021, he has continued working behind the scenes, including producing the upcoming prequel series NCIS: Origins. Off-screen, he has been married to actress Pam Dawber since 1987, with whom he shares two sons. Known for his craftsmanship and low-profile lifestyle, Harmon remains one of the most respected figures in American television.
