Mark O'Brien is a Canadian actor, director, and writer, born on May 7, 1984, in St. John's, Newfoundland. After studying English at Memorial University of Newfoundland, he built a successful career in both Canadian and international productions, becoming known for his versatile and often intense character work. He achieved early recognition for his role as the eccentric nephew Des Courtney in the long-running Canadian television series Republic of Doyle (2010–2014). He gained further international acclaim for playing the ambitious software engineer Tom Rendon in the AMC drama Halt and Catch Fire (2015–2017). O'Brien has a significant filmography, featuring major roles in the hit horror-comedy Ready or Not (2019) as Alex Le Domas, the psychological horror film The Righteous (2021), which he also wrote and directed, and the critically acclaimed dramas Arrival (2016) and Marriage Story (2019). He won the Canadian Screen Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of legendary hockey player Terry Sawchuk in the biographical film Goalie (2019). He is married to actress Georgina Reilly, with whom he has one child.
