Martin Clunes

Alexander Martin Clunes (OBE) is a celebrated British actor, director, and television presenter, widely regarded as a "national treasure" for his enduring presence on UK television. Born on November 28, 1961, in Wimbledon, London, into a theatrical family—his father was the renowned actor Alec Clunes—he first rose to stardom in the 1990s as the "lager-loving loafer" Gary Strang in the hit sitcom Men Behaving Badly, a role that earned him a BAFTA for Best Comedy Performance. He later achieved global fame as the titular character in the long-running ITV drama Doc Martin (2004–2022), playing the curmudgeonly, blood-phobic surgeon Dr. Martin Ellingham. His versatile career spans acclaimed dramatic roles in series like Manhunt and Goodbye, Mr. Chips, as well as high-profile film appearances in Shakespeare in Love and Saving Grace. In 2025, Clunes transitioned into a major new phase of his career by joining the cast of Emerald Fennell’s 2026 adaptation of Wuthering Heights. He is set to play Mr. Earnshaw, the compassionate patriarch whose decision to adopt the orphan Heathcliff triggers the story's central conflict. Clunes described the project as a "massive, huge-budget" production, marking a significant return to the big screen alongside Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi. Off-screen, he lives a quiet rural life in Dorset with his wife, producer Philippa Braithwaite, and their daughter. A dedicated animal lover, he is a former president of the British Horse Society and a patron of numerous charities, including Julia’s House children's hospice.
