Mary Gibbs

Mary Gibbs (born October 5, 1996) is an American voice actress, most famously known for voicing the adorable human child Boo in the immensely popular Pixar animated film "Monsters, Inc." (2001). Her unique contribution to the film stems from the fact that she was a toddler during the production, and her natural reactions and sounds were often incorporated directly into Boo's performance.Born in Pasadena, California, Mary is the daughter of Rob Gibbs, a late Pixar director and story artist, and Susan Hollands. Due to her father's work at Pixar, Mary was frequently in the studio during the production of "Monsters, Inc." The filmmakers found it challenging to get a consistent performance from a very young child for the character of Boo. Instead of formal voice recording sessions, they often followed Mary around the studio, recording her natural giggles, babbles, and cries, and then used these authentic sounds for Boo's dialogue and expressions. Her parents would help simulate scenarios to elicit the desired audio reactions.Beyond "Monsters, Inc.," archived recordings of Gibbs' screams as Boo were reused for baby Riley in Pixar's "Inside Out" (2015). She also voiced Baby Kiara in "The Lion King II: Simba's Pride" (1998) early in her career. After a break, Mary Gibbs returned to acting in 2022, notably voicing Janessa Jensen in the audio-drama series "Heroes of Extinction." She has also maintained a presence online, sharing insights into her experience as Boo and her current life, including her passion for health and wellness.
