Matthew J. Saville is a New Zealand writer, director, and actor, born in Durban, South Africa, to a Kiwi mother and a South African father. He grew up in rural New Zealand and developed an interest in theatre and film during his university studies, later training as an actor at Toi Whakaari: NZ Drama School. Saville's career spans stage and screen, with his first play, "The Boxer," touring New Zealand and earning him a nomination for best new writer in the 1993 Chapman Tripp Theatre Awards. His play "Kikia te Poa," about the Boer War, received critical acclaim in Wellington, Sydney, and London.On screen, Saville has acted in various television series, including "Spartacus" (2010), Taika Waititi's "Super City" (2011), and "The Almighty Johnsons" (2013), and has written for shows like "Shortland Street" (2005), "The Insiders Guide to Love" (2005), and "The Blue Rose" (2013). He also created the children's cooking show "Kune's Kitchen." As a director, his short films "Hitch Hike" (2011) and "Dive" (2014) garnered international festival recognition, with "Dive" winning awards at the Show Me Shorts Film Festival. In 2021, Saville made his feature directorial debut with "Juniper," which he also wrote, starring Academy Award nominee Charlotte Rampling. The film received positive reviews and screened theatrically worldwide. He also had an acting role as Officer Mitchell in the 2022 film "X."
