Matthew Avery Modine (born March 22, 1959) is a highly respected American actor, filmmaker, and activist whose career spans over four decades of diverse roles in cinema and television. Born in Loma Linda, California, as the youngest of seven children, he was raised in a family that managed drive-in movie theaters, sparking his early interest in the industry. After studying under the legendary Stella Adler in New York City, Modine rose to international stardom in the 1980s with a series of acclaimed performances in films such as Robert Altman's Streamers (for which he shared the Venice Film Festival Best Actor Award), Alan Parker's Birdy, and the wrestling drama Vision Quest. He is perhaps most iconic for his role as Private Joker in Stanley Kubrick's 1987 Vietnam War masterpiece Full Metal Jacket, a performance that remains a cornerstone of cinematic history. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Modine continued to display remarkable versatility, moving between major blockbusters and poignant television projects. He earned Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for his work in the HBO film And the Band Played On and the Hallmark production What the Deaf Man Heard. His later career saw him enter the superhero genre as Deputy Commissioner Peter Foley in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises (2012) and reach a new generation of fans as the enigmatic Dr. Martin "Papa" Brenner in the Netflix global phenomenon Stranger Things. In recent years, he has remained a prolific presence, starring as Scott Shaw in the 2021 Wrong Turn reboot, appearing in Christopher Nolan’s Oscar-winning Oppenheimer (2023) as Vannevar Bush, and leading the 2024 cycling drama Hard Miles. As of 2026, he continues to expand his legacy with upcoming projects such as the Netflix series Zero Day alongside Robert De Niro and the sci-fi thriller Protector. Beyond his acting, Modine is a dedicated environmentalist and political activist. He is the founder of Bicycle for a Day, a global initiative promoting cycling for health and sustainability, and has been a pioneer in reducing the film industry's environmental footprint—most notably by successfully advocating for double-sided script printing to save paper. He is also an accomplished director of several award-winning short films and documentaries, including the recent Sludge: A PFAS Uprising (2024). Modine has been married to Caridad Rivera since 1980, and they have two children: filmmaker Boman Modine and actress Ruby Modine.
