Mawaan Rizwan

Mawaan Rizwan (born August 18, 1992, in Lahore, Pakistan) is a Pakistani-born British actor, comedian, writer, and director known for his distinctive blend of surreal humour, physical comedy, and confessional stand-up. Rizwan began his career as a self-taught YouTuber at the age of 16, quickly building a following before transitioning to traditional media. He gained early writing experience on CBeebies shows and achieved wider recognition for writing on the acclaimed Netflix series Sex Education (Series 2 and 3), a role that earned him a spot on the Forbes "30 Under 30" list in 2020. As a performer, he appeared on the popular panel show Taskmaster (Series 10) and starred opposite Maisie Williams in the Sky/HBO Max miniseries Two Weeks to Live (2020), as well as the BAFTA-winning BBC drama Murdered by My Father (2016). In 2015, he presented the documentary How Gay Is Pakistan? for BBC Three, exploring LGBTQ+ issues in his country of birth. His biggest critical success came as the creator, writer, and star of the surreal BBC Three comedy series Juice (2023), which is based on his critically acclaimed 2018 Edinburgh Fringe show. For his performance as Jamma in Juice—which co-stars his mother, Shahnaz, and brother, Nabhaan Rizwan—he won the 2024 BAFTA Award for Best Male Performance in a Comedy Programme. Mawaan is openly queer, trained at the prestigious École Philippe Gaulier, and continues to perform stand-up, balancing mainstream success with a unique, boundary-pushing comedic voice.
