Michael Anthony Angarano is an American actor, director, and writer, born on December 3, 1987, in Brooklyn, New York City. Of Italian descent, his family owns and operates a dance studio in Canoga Park, California. He graduated from Crespi Carmelite High School. Angarano began his acting career at a young age, and by the late 1990s, he was already making a name for himself, even being one of three finalists for the role of young Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace.Over the years, Angarano has built a diverse filmography, appearing in both independent and major studio productions. His notable film roles include Music of the Heart (1999), Almost Famous (2000) as young William, Sky High (2005), The Forbidden Kingdom (2008) alongside Jackie Chan and Jet Li (for which he undertook intensive martial arts training), Gentlemen Broncos (2009), Haywire (2011), The English Teacher (2013), and Oppenheimer (2023).On television, Angarano has made significant appearances in series such as Will & Grace, 24, The Knick, I'm Dying Up Here, and This Is Us, for which he earned a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series.Beyond acting, Angarano has expanded his creative endeavors into directing and writing. He directed and co-wrote the 2017 film Sun Dogs and more recently directed and co-wrote the 2024 road comedy film Sacramento, in which he also stars as Rickey. The film, which premiered at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival and was released in April 2025, tells the story of two friends on an impulsive road trip. His upcoming projects include Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 (2024) and Laid (2025).Angarano is married to actress Maya Erskine, and they have two children. They frequently collaborate creatively, with Erskine starring in Sacramento alongside him.
