Michelle Buteau is an American comedian, actress, television host, producer, and podcast host, born on July 24, 1977, in New Jersey. She was raised in a Catholic household by her mother, who is Jamaican, and her father, who is Haitian. Buteau attended Florida International University, where she studied journalism and television production, initially pursuing a career in broadcast news. However, after working as an overnight TV news editor in New York City, particularly in the aftermath of the September 11th attacks in 2001, she decided to pursue her passion for stand-up comedy, making her debut in 2001.Over the years, Buteau built a reputation for her bold and relatable humor, appearing in various television shows and films, including "Always Be My Maybe," "The First Wives Club," "Someone Great," "Russian Doll," and "Tales of the City." She gained significant recognition as the host of the Netflix reality competition series "The Circle" and "The American Barbecue Showdown." In 2020, she released her acclaimed Netflix stand-up special "Welcome to Buteaupia," which won a Critics Choice Television Award for Best Comedy Special. She is also the co-host of the podcast "Adulting."Michelle Buteau is the executive producer, writer, and star of the Netflix comedy series "Survival of the Thickest," which premiered in 2023 and is inspired by her autobiographical book of essays of the same name. She received the 55th NAACP Image Award for "Outstanding Breakthrough Creative (Television)" for the series. Her other recent work includes starring in the film "Babes" (2024) and taping her Netflix comedy special "A Buteau-ful Mind at Radio City Music Hall" in June 2024, becoming the first woman to tape a comedy special at the iconic venue. She lives in the Bronx with her husband, Gijs van der Most, whom she married in 2010, and their twins, born via surrogacy in January 2019. Together, they also run a vintage furniture store in Brooklyn called Van der Most Modern.
