Mindy Kaling is an American actress, comedian, screenwriter, and producer, born Vera Mindy Chokalingam on June 24, 1979, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to Indian immigrant parents. She graduated from Dartmouth College in 2001 with a degree in playwriting, having been involved in improvisational comedy and an a cappella group. Kaling's breakthrough came when she joined the writing staff of the NBC sitcom The Office in 2005 at the age of 24, becoming the only woman of color on the writing team. She also starred on the show for eight seasons as the eccentric customer service representative Kelly Kapoor, wrote over a dozen episodes—including the Emmy-nominated "Niagara"—and eventually served as an executive producer, earning multiple Emmy nominations for Outstanding Comedy Series.Kaling then gained wider attention as the creator, writer, executive producer, and star of her own comedy series, The Mindy Project (2012–2017), where she played Dr. Mindy Lahiri, a successful OB/GYN with a love for romantic comedies.
