Mohanlal Viswanathan, mononymously known as Mohanlal, is a celebrated Indian actor and filmmaker, predominantly recognized for his work in Malayalam cinema. Born on May 21, 1960, in Elanthoor, Kerala, he embarked on his acting journey at the age of 18 with the film Thiranottam (1978), though it was delayed for 25 years due to censorship issues. His official screen debut was in the 1980 romance film Manjil Virinja Pookkal, where he portrayed the antagonist. Over the decades, Mohanlal has acted in over 400 films across various languages, including Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, and Kannada, earning acclaim for his versatility and depth in roles. Mohanlal's illustrious career has been adorned with numerous accolades. He has won five National Film Awards, including two Best Actor awards, and nine Kerala State Film Awards. In recognition of his contributions to Indian cinema, he was honored with the Padma Shri in 2001 and the Padma Bhushan in 2019. Additionally, he holds the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Territorial Army, a distinction he received in 2009. Beyond acting, Mohanlal has ventured into film production, direction, and playback singing. He made his directorial debut with Barroz: Guardian of D’Gama’s Treasure in 2024.
