Moushumi Chatterjee
Moushumi Chatterjee, born Indira Chattopadhyaya on April 26, 1948, in Kolkata, is an acclaimed Indian actress who primarily worked in Hindi and Bengali cinema. Hailing from a Bengali Brahmin family with her father in the Indian Army and her grandfather a judge, she made an unconventional entry into films. She debuted as a child artiste in the Bengali hit Balika Badhu (1967) directed by Tarun Majumdar, while still in her pre-teens. Despite being keen on completing her studies, fate led her back to acting. She was married at a young age to Jayant Mukherjee, the son of the renowned singer and composer Hemant Kumar. Interestingly, she began her Hindi film career after her marriage, a rarity at the time. Her Hindi debut was in Shakti Samanta's Anuraag (1972), which was a major success and earned her a Filmfare nomination for Best Actress. She further solidified her position with powerful performances in films like Roti Kapda Aur Makaan (1974), for which she received a Filmfare nomination for Best Supporting Actress, and Basu Chatterjee's Angoor (1982). Known for her natural acting style, charming dimples, and expressive eyes, she starred opposite leading actors of her time, including Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan, Jeetendra, and Vinod Mehra. Over her decades-long career, she has appeared in over 100 films across various languages, showcasing her versatility. In recent years, she has continued to appear in films like The Japanese Wife (2010), Goynar Baksho (2013), and Piku (2015), demonstrating her enduring presence in the industry. She was honored with the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015.
