N. Azhagamperumal is a highly respected Indian film director and character actor who has worked predominantly in the Tamil cinema industry since the 1990s. Born in Kulasekarapuram, Kanyakumari District, he defied his family's wishes for him to become an engineer by instead enrolling and graduating with a Gold Medal from the Adyar Film Institute in 1991. He began his career by serving as a key assistant director to Mani Ratnam on seminal films from Thalapathi (1991) to Iruvar (1997). Azhagamperumal made his successful directorial debut with the romantic comedy Dumm Dumm Dumm (2001), produced and written by Mani Ratnam, followed by the long-delayed film Udhaya (2004) starring Vijay. However, he is perhaps best known to the modern audience as a versatile character actor, a career that began unexpectedly when Mani Ratnam cast him in a quirky role in Alaipayuthey (2000). Since then, he has delivered memorable performances in numerous acclaimed films such as Selvaraghavan's Pudhupettai (2006), Ram's Kattradhu Thamizh (2007) and Taramani (2017), and has recently appeared in ensemble casts of major projects like Master (2021) and the Mari Selvaraj-directed Bison: Kaalamaadan (2025).
