Ncuti Gatwa, born Mizero Ncuti Gatwa on October 15, 1992, is a Rwandan-Scottish actor who has quickly become one of the most prominent faces in British television and film. Born in Kigali, Rwanda, his family fled to Scotland during the 1994 Rwandan genocide. He trained at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, graduating in 2013.Gatwa first rose to international prominence with his breakout role as the flamboyant and charismatic Eric Effiong in the Netflix comedy-drama Sex Education, a role he played from 2019 to 2023. His performance earned him widespread critical acclaim, a BAFTA Scotland Award, and three BAFTA Television Award nominations. Following this success, he was cast in a pivotal role as one of the Kens in Greta Gerwig's 2023 blockbuster film Barbie.In May 2022, the BBC announced that Gatwa would take on the iconic role of the Doctor in the long-running science fiction series Doctor Who, making him the first Black actor to lead the series. He first appeared in the role in December 2023 during the show's 60th-anniversary specials and has since starred as the Fifteenth Doctor. He has received high praise for his performance, with many critics lauding his fresh, joyful, and captivating take on the character. His other recent credits include the Apple TV+ series Masters of the Air and a role in the 2025 film The Roses.
