He is an alumnus of the Government College of Fine Arts, Chennai, where his daily travels provided inspiration for his future film ideas. Ranjith began his career as an assistant director, notably under filmmaker Venkat Prabhu for films like Chennai 600028 (2007). His directorial debut came in 2012 with the romantic comedy Attakathi, which achieved cult status for its simple and relatable storytelling. Ranjith cemented his reputation with his second film, the political action-drama Madras (2014), which garnered critical acclaim for its realistic depiction of North Chennai life. He gained major mainstream recognition by directing two blockbuster action-dramas starring Rajinikanth: Kabali (2016) and Kaala (2018).
