He transitioned to television in the 1990s, earning an Emmy nomination for his performance in "Once & Again." However, it was his iconic role as neurosurgeon Dr. Derek "McDreamy" Shepherd in the hit medical drama "Grey's Anatomy" (2005–2015; 2020–2021) that solidified his status as a household name and earned him numerous awards and nominations, including a Screen Actors Guild Award.Beyond "Grey's Anatomy," Dempsey has appeared in a variety of films, including "Sweet Home Alabama" (2002), "Enchanted" (2007) and its sequel "Disenchanted" (2022), "Made of Honor" (2008), "Valentine's Day" (2010), "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" (2011), "Bridget Jones's Baby" (2016), and the recent horror film "Thanksgiving" (2023), where he played Sheriff Eric Newlon. He is also a dedicated philanthropist, having founded the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing in his hometown, inspired by his mother's battle with ovarian cancer.
