Patti LuPone

Patti LuPone is an American actress and singer widely considered a living legend of musical theater. Born on April 21, 1949, in Northport, New York, she was part of the first graduating class of The Juilliard School’s Drama Division. Her career began in 1972 as a founding member of John Houseman’s The Acting Company, but she catapulted to international superstardom in 1979 for her iconic, Tony-winning portrayal of Eva Perón in the original Broadway production of Evita. LuPone is equally celebrated in London’s West End, where she was the first American to win a Laurence Olivier Award for her roles as Fantine in the original cast of Les Misérables and Moll in The Cradle Will Rock (1985). Throughout her decades-long career, she has won three Tony Awards: for Evita (1980), for her powerhouse performance as Mama Rose in the 2008 revival of Gypsy, and for her role as Joanne in the 2021 gender-swapped revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Company. Beyond the stage, LuPone has built a formidable screen career. On television, she starred as Libby Thatcher in the drama Life Goes On (1989–1993) and has delivered memorable guest and recurring performances in shows like Frasier (which earned her an Emmy nomination), 30 Rock, American Horror Story: Coven, Pose, and Penny Dreadful. Most recently, in 2024 and 2025, she gained a new generation of fans for her role as the witch Lilia Calderu in the Marvel Cinematic Universe series Agatha All Along, earning nominations for a Critics' Choice Award and an Independent Spirit Award. Her film credits include notable roles in Witness (1985), Driving Miss Daisy (1989), State and Main (2000), and Ari Aster’s Beau Is Afraid (2023). As of late 2025, LuPone remains a vital force in the industry. She recently starred on Broadway in the play The Roommate (2024) alongside Mia Farrow and continues to tour her concert shows, such as A Life in Notes. A two-time Grammy Award winner for her operatic work in The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny, she was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 2006. Known for her technical precision, immense vocal range, and outspoken personality, she is also the author of the New York Times best-seller Patti LuPone: A Memoir.
