Trained at Drama Centre London (1965–1968), she made her stage debut in 1969 in major productions like King Lear and gained recognition in Harold Pinter's Betrayal, cementing her reputation in British theatre. Wilton became a household name with her role as Ann Bryce in the sitcom Ever Decreasing Circles (1984–1989), and further showcased her range in The Borrowers (1992–93), earning acclaim on television.
