Phil Johnston
Phil Johnston (born October 26, 1971) is an American filmmaker, screenwriter, and voice actor known for his work with Walt Disney Animation Studios. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin–Madison with a degree in journalism and worked for nine years as a TV news reporter before pursuing filmmaking at Columbia University, where he earned his MFA in 2004. His first feature-length screenplay to be produced was the 2011 comedy Cedar Rapids, which earned him an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best First Screenplay. He is best known for co-writing the Disney animated films Wreck-It Ralph (2012), Zootopia (2016)—for which he won an Annie Award for Writing—and Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018), which also marked his feature directorial debut, co-directing with Rich Moore, and earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature. He has also worked on the screenplay for the action-comedy The Brothers Grimsby (2016) and has provided voices for his animated films, such as Surge Protector and Gideon Grey.
