Quang Thắng
Born on October 21, 1968, in the port city of Hai Phong as Đặng Quang Thắng, NSƯT (Meritorious Artist) Quang Thắng is a beloved veteran of Vietnamese stage and screen, famously nicknamed "Thắng Mũi To" (Big-Nosed Thắng) or "Thắng Vẹo." Before becoming a household name, he endured a humble and difficult youth, working manual labor jobs as a delivery man and a cart-pusher to support his passion for the arts. After graduating from the Hai Phong Intermediate School of Culture and Arts in 1989, he spent decades as a cornerstone of the Hai Phong Drama Troupe before transferring to the Hanoi Drama Theater in 2019. He is most iconic for his legendary portrayal of the "Economic God" (Táo Kinh Tế) in the long-running annual satiric show Gặp nhau cuối năm (Táo Quân), a role that has made him a symbol of Vietnamese Lunar New Year celebrations for over twenty years. While widely recognized for his comedic genius, Quang Thắng has consistently demonstrated a formidable range in serious dramatic roles, leading to his prestigious appointment as a Meritorious Artist in 2015. In Victor Vu’s The Last Wife (Người Vợ Cuối Cùng, 2023), he broke away from his jovial public persona to deliver a chilling performance as the District Governor (Quan Đức Trọng). Portraying the film's central antagonist, he embodied the cold, calculating, and patriarchal authority of 19th-century feudal Vietnam, providing a stark and powerful contrast to the vulnerability of the female leads. This role was a significant milestone in his late career, proving his ability to anchor a high-budget cinematic epic with gravitas and menace.
