Quinta Brunson is an American actress, comedian, writer, and producer who has become one of the most celebrated figures in modern television comedy. Born on December 21, 1989, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she is the youngest of five children and got her start in comedy by creating viral videos for social media.Brunson first gained prominence in 2014 with her self-produced Instagram series, "Girl Who Has Never Been on a Nice Date," which led to her working as a video producer and development partner for BuzzFeed Video, where she created numerous popular short-form series. She later transitioned to mainstream television, notably writing and starring in the first season of the HBO sketch comedy series "A Black Lady Sketch Show" and appearing in shows like "New Girl" and "Single Parents."Her breakthrough came with the creation of the ABC mockumentary sitcom "Abbott Elementary" (2021–present), which she also writes, executive produces, and stars in as the optimistic second-grade teacher, Janine Teagues. The show, inspired by her mother's career as a public school teacher in Philadelphia, has been a critical and commercial success. For her work on Abbott Elementary, Brunson has won multiple prestigious awards, making history as the first Black woman to receive three Emmy nominations in the comedy category in the same year (Outstanding Writing, Outstanding Comedy Series, and Outstanding Lead Actress). She went on to win the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series in 2022 and the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 2024, the latter of which made her the first Black woman to win the category in over 40 years. She has also won a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy for the show.Brunson's other projects include her bestselling 2021 essay collection, "She Memes Well," and a supporting film role as Oprah Winfrey in the movie Weird: The Al Yankovic Story (2022).
