Rainn Wilson is an American actor, comedian, writer, and producer, best known for his portrayal of Dwight Schrute on NBC's The Office. Born Rainn Percival Dietrich Wilson on January 20, 1966, in Seattle, Washington, he is the son of Shay Cooper, a yoga teacher and actress, and Robert G. Wilson, a novelist and artist. Wilson's early life included a period living in Nicaragua before returning to Seattle. He attended Tufts University and later earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Washington in 1986, followed by a Master of Fine Arts from New York University . Wilson's acting career began with theater work in New York City. He made his film debut in Galaxy Quest (1999) and appeared in supporting roles in films like Almost Famous (2000) and House of 1000 Corpses (2003). His television career includes a recurring role as Arthur Martin on HBO's Six Feet Under (2003–2005) and a starring role as Everett Backstrom in the Fox series Backstrom (2015). Beyond acting, Wilson co-founded the digital media company SoulPancake in 2008, which produces uplifting content centered on life's big questions. He also authored the memoir The Bassoon King: My Life in Art, Faith, and Idiocy (2015), which discusses his career, spirituality, and personal life. In recent years, Wilson has been involved in environmental activism. He participated in the "Save the Flavors" campaign during New York Climate Week, highlighting the impact of climate change on food, particularly ice cream flavors like vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry. Wilson is married to writer Holiday Reinhorn, whom he met in an acting class at the University of Washington. They married in 1995 and have a son, Walter, born in 2004 .
