Born on June 1, 1957, in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, he began his career as a stuntman and has worked in over 500 South Indian films. He is noted for his rough voice and his hairless appearance, which he claims was the result of exposure to industrial waste during a stunt sequence. He made his acting debut in a small but significant role in the 2003 film Pithamagan. He gained critical acclaim for his performance as a cruel leader who tortures beggars in the 2009 film Naan Kadavul, earning him the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Villain.
