Rakesh Bedi

Born on December 1, 1954, in New Delhi, Rakesh Bedi is a legendary Indian actor and alumnus of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, whose career has spanned over four decades across theatre, television, and film. After a victory in a mono-acting competition during his school days at Kendriya Vidyalaya, Andrewsganj, sparked his interest in the craft, he began his professional journey with the theatre group Pierrot’s Troupe. He made his silver screen debut in 1979 with Hamare Tumhare, but it was his role as the lovable Omi in the cult classic Chashme Buddoor (1981) that established him as a premier comedic talent. Bedi became a household fixture through iconic television sitcoms like Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi, Shrimaan Shrimati, and Yes Boss, and in recent years, he has continued to entertain millions as Babulal in Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah and as Angoori Bhabhi’s father in Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain!. Despite being primarily celebrated for his comedic genius, Bedi experienced a major career "reinvention" in December 2025 with his role in Aditya Dhar’s spy blockbuster Dhurandhar. In a dramatic departure from his jovial image, he portrayed Jameel Jamali, a cunning and manipulative Pakistani politician in Karachi’s Lyari district. His performance—modeled after real-world political figures and characterized by a deceptive, "fox-like" charm—was lauded by critics as one of the film’s hidden highlights, demonstrating his ability to play a menacing, power-hungry strategist who "pulls the strings" from behind the scenes. Off-screen, Bedi is a prolific playwright and poet, known for directing and starring in the one-man play Massage, where he portrays 24 different characters. He currently resides in Mumbai with his wife, Aradhana Bedi, and their two daughters, Ridhima and Ritika, and is scheduled to reprise his role as Jameel Jamali in the sequel, Dhurandhar 2: The Revenge, arriving in cinemas on March 19, 2026.
