Ramya Krishnan (also credited as Ramya Krishna), born on September 15, 1970, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, is one of the most versatile and accomplished Indian actresses, having appeared in well over 200 films across five languages: Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, and Hindi. Trained in Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi, she began her career in the mid-1980s, rising to prominence in the Telugu and Tamil industries by balancing glamorous, comedic, and powerful dramatic roles. Her career-defining turn came with her iconic portrayal of the ruthless antagonist Neelambari in Rajinikanth's Tamil blockbuster Padayappa (1999), which earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Tamil and cemented her ability to dominate the screen. However, she achieved massive pan-Indian and international recognition for her majestic and unforgettable role as Rajamatha Sivagami Devi, the powerful queen and mother figure, in S. S. Rajamouli's epic saga, Baahubali: The Beginning (2015) and its sequel. This performance, which she initially hesitated to take on, won her the Filmfare Award and Nandi Award for Best Supporting Actress. Throughout her prolific career, she has consistently taken on impactful character roles in modern films like Soggade Chinni Nayana, Super Deluxe, Jailer, and the recent Guntur Kaaram, and she is married to noted Telugu film director Krishna Vamsi.
