Richard Jenkins is an American actor born on May 4, 1947, in DeKalb, Illinois. He began his career in theater at the Trinity Repertory Company and made his film debut in 1974.Jenkins is widely recognized for his portrayal of the deceased patriarch Nathaniel Fisher on the HBO funeral drama series Six Feet Under (2001–2005). He has a long and varied filmography, often appearing in supporting roles in movies like Silverado (1985), Hannah and Her Sisters (1986), The Witches of Eastwick (1987), Sea of Love (1989), Blue Steel (1990), There's Something About Mary (1998), Me, Myself & Irene (2000), and three Coen Brothers films: The Man Who Wasn't There (2001), Intolerable Cruelty (2003), and Burn After Reading (2008).He gained significant critical acclaim for his lead role in The Visitor (2007), which earned him nominations for the Academy Award for Best Actor and the Independent Spirit Award. Jenkins won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie for his role in the limited drama series Olive Kitteridge (2014). More recently, he has received nominations for his work in Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story (2022) as Lionel Dahmer, and also appeared in films like The Shape of Water (2017) and Nightmare Alley (2021). He has been married to Sharon R. Friedrick since August 23, 1969, and they have two children.
