Rosalind Chao

Rosalind Chao is an acclaimed American actress with a career spanning over five decades, known for her versatile performances across film, television, and stage. Born on September 23, 1957, in Anaheim, California, she was raised in Orange County, where her parents, who were performers with the Peking opera, ran a Chinese restaurant. Chao began acting at a young age, appearing in commercials and television after being discovered at her family's restaurant. She also trained and performed in Peking Opera and Chinese dance from an early age. Despite briefly considering a career in journalism after earning a degree in broadcast journalism from the University of Southern California, her passion for acting led her back to the performing arts.Chao is perhaps most widely recognized for her television roles as Soon-Lee Klinger, the wife of Corporal Klinger, in the final episodes of MASH* and its spin-off AfterMASH, and as Keiko O'Brien, the wife of Chief Miles O'Brien, in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Her significant film credits include her powerful portrayal of Rose Hsu Jordan in the critically acclaimed 1993 film The Joy Luck Club, as well as roles in What Dreams May Come, Freaky Friday (2003), Just Like Heaven, Disney's live-action Mulan (2020) as Hua Li (Mulan's mother), The Laundromat, Plus One, and the recent television series 3 Body Problem (2024). She continues to work actively in film and television, with upcoming appearances in "Freakier Friday" (2025) and "Sacramento" (2024). Beyond her on-screen work, Chao has also performed extensively in theater, including a recent starring role in the National Theatre of Great Britain's production of The Great Wave.
