He spent part of his early childhood in Jakarta, Indonesia, before moving to the United States at the age of four, where he was raised by his mother in Fairfax, Virginia.Butler initially pursued a degree in chemical and biomolecular engineering at Ohio State University, but after a year, he decided to drop out and moved to Los Angeles at age 20 to explore acting.
