Born on May 17, 1990, in Singapore, he has a diverse background with a Chinese-Malaysian mother and an English-Dutch father. He spent part of his early childhood in Jakarta, Indonesia, before moving to the United States at the age of four, where he was raised by his mother in Fairfax, Virginia.Butler initially pursued a degree in chemical and biomolecular engineering at Ohio State University, but after a year, he decided to drop out and moved to Los Angeles at age 20 to explore acting. He took his first acting class at 21, and began his career in student films and low-budget projects.His breakthrough came with a recurring role as Brett Willis on the Disney Channel series "K.C. Undercover."
