Rowan Atkinson

Rowan Atkinson is a renowned English actor and comedian, celebrated for his iconic roles in Blackadder and Mr. Bean. Born on January 6, 1955, in Consett, County Durham, England, Atkinson developed an early interest in comedy while studying electrical engineering at Newcastle University and later at The Queen’s College, Oxford. His comedic career began with the BBC sketch show Not the Nine O’Clock News (1979–1982), which earned him a British Academy Television Award for Best Entertainment Performance in 1981. Atkinson's portrayal of the cynical and scheming Edmund Blackadder in the historical sitcom Blackadder (1983–1989) solidified his status as a leading comedic actor. He further gained international fame with the creation of Mr. Bean (1990–1995), a largely silent character known for his slapstick humor and expressive face. The character's success led to film adaptations, including Bean (1997) and Mr. Bean's Holiday (2007), as well as an animated series. In addition to his television and film work, Atkinson voiced the character Zazu in Disney's The Lion King (1994) and appeared in films such as Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994), Love Actually (2003), and Johnny English (2003), a spy parody that spawned two sequels. He also portrayed the French detective Jules Amedee Francois Maigret in the ITV series Maigret (2016–2017). In 2023, Atkinson took on the role of Father Julius, a sweet-toothed cleric and leader of a group of chocoholic monks, in the musical fantasy film Wonka. The film, starring Timothée Chalamet as the young Willy Wonka, explores the origins of the beloved chocolatier. Atkinson's contributions to drama and charity were recognized in 2013 when he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). Beyond acting, he is an avid automobile enthusiast and has participated in racing events. In 2001, he made headlines by safely landing a private plane after the pilot became incapacitated during a holiday in Kenya.
