Rufus Frederik Sewell is a British actor born on October 29, 1967, in Hammersmith, London. His mother, Jo, was a Welsh artist, and his Australian father, William, was an animator who worked on The Beatles' Yellow Submarine film. His parents divorced when he was five, and his father died when he was ten.Sewell's acting career began after he attended the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London. He was noticed by an agent after Judi Dench directed him in a play. His breakthrough came in 1993 with a role in the film Dirty Weekend and the television adaptation of Middlemarch. He has since appeared in a wide range of films and television series, often taking on roles in period dramas.His film credits include Carrington, Hamlet, Dangerous Beauty, Dark City, A Knight's Tale, The Illusionist, The Legend of Zorro, The Holiday, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, and Old. On television, he is known for his roles in Middlemarch, The Pillars of the Earth, Victoria, and The Man in the High Castle. He currently stars in the Netflix series The Diplomat.Sewell has also had a successful career on the stage, where he originated the role of Septimus Hodge in Tom Stoppard's Arcadia and the role of Jan in Stoppard's Rock 'n' Roll.
