Simon Patrick Douro Hoare, known professionally by the stage-name Sam Hoare, is a British actor, director, and writer, born on June 27, 1981. He was educated at Eton College and later read Philosophy and Psychology at the University of Edinburgh, where he performed in student theatre. Hoare is recognized for his role as rower Dickie Burnell in the 2012 BBC One Olympic drama Bert and Dickie, which told the story of the 1948 gold medallists. He has appeared in numerous television series, including recurring roles in Doctors and EastEnders, and more recently in Grantchester, Endeavour, National Treasure, Outlander, McMafia, Knightfall, Carnival Row, Showtrial, The Capture, and as ACC Cassian Pewe in Grace. His film credits include The Golden Compass (2007) and Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), as well as biographical dramas like The Program (2016) and An Adventure in Space and Time (2013), where he played Douglas Camfield. Beyond acting, Hoare wrote and directed his debut feature film, Having You, which premiered in 2013 on Sky Movies. He has also directed music videos and short films such as Babysitting and Training Day, and has written for television, including on Netflix's The English Game. Hoare is married to actress Romola Garai, and they have two children.
