Sam Spruell
Sam Spruell (born January 1, 1977) is an acclaimed British character actor known for his ability to portray complex, often menacing, and physically demanding roles across film and television. Raised in South East London, Spruell studied at Hull University before making his stage debut at the National Theatre. He first gained international attention for his role as a brutal mobster in the urban thriller "London to Brighton" (2006) and has since built a prolific career working with high-profile directors. His film credits include Kathryn Bigelow’s "The Hurt Locker" and "K-19: The Widowmaker," Ridley Scott’s "The Counselor," and the villainous Oleg Malankov in "Taken 3." He is also widely recognized for playing Finn in "Snow White and the Huntsman" and the notorious gangster Jack "The Hat" McVitie in the Kray twins biopic "Legend." On television, Spruell’s career has reached new heights in the 2020s. He earned critical acclaim for his performance as the enigmatic and unsettling Ole Munch in the fifth season of "Fargo" (2023–2024) and played the formidable villain Swarm in Doctor Who. In "The Thing with Feathers" (2025), he plays Paul, a character who exists within the orbit of the grieving family led by Benedict Cumberbatch. Spruell’s 2025-2026 slate is particularly busy; he has been cast as Prince Maekar Targaryen in the Game of Thrones prequel series "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" and appears in the drama "H Is for Hawk" and the crime series "The Gold." Known for his "chameleon-like" ability to vanish into roles, Spruell continues to be a staple of prestige British and American drama.
