Sarah Louise Christine Chalke is a Canadian-American actress, born on August 27, 1976, in Ottawa, Ontario. Known for her career in television comedy, she speaks both French and German fluently, a detail often incorporated into her roles. Chalke first gained widespread recognition in 1993 when she took over the role of the eldest daughter, Becky Conner, on the hugely successful ABC sitcom Roseanne, a role she played until the show's original run ended. Her next defining role was Dr. Elliot Reid on the beloved medical comedy series Scrubs (2001–2010), where she was a main cast member for nine seasons. More recently, she has become known for her starring role as Kate Mularkey in the Netflix drama series Firefly Lane (2021–2023), and for her voice work as Beth Smith and Space Beth in the acclaimed Adult Swim animated series Rick and Morty (2013–present). She also had a memorable recurring role as Stella Zinman on the CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother. Beyond her acting work, Chalke is an advocate for breast cancer detection and has raised awareness for Kawasaki's Disease following her son's diagnosis. She is also slated to appear in the 2025 action-comedy film Playdate.
