Saswata Chatterjee

Saswata Chatterjee (born 19 December 1970 in Kolkata, West Bengal) is a distinguished Indian actor celebrated for his work across Bengali cinema, television, and Bollywood. A versatile performer, he's best known for his iconic roles as the detective assistant “Topshe” in Sandip Ray’s Feluda series and the chilling contract killer “Bob Biswas” in the hit Hindi thriller Kahaani (2012) . Son of renowned actor Subhendu Chatterjee, Saswata initially aspired to become an actor during his college days, joining theatre groups like Charbak and Biswarupa, which laid the foundation for his career. His screen debut was in the mid-1990s, first in a Hindi serial based on Kaalpurush, then as Topshe in Bengali television—earning critical acclaim and popularity. In cinema, Saswata gained acclaim for roles in notable Bengali films like Meghe Dhaka Tara, Bhooter Bhabishyat, Proloy, and Abar Aranye, earning multiple awards such as the Zee Bangla Gaurav Samman, Anandalok Award, Tele Cine Award, and WBFJA Best Actor for Chobiyal. His portrayal of Bob Biswas, a deceptively mild-mannered assassin, became a cultural phenomenon, drawing comparisons to iconic villains like Mogambo and Gabbar Singh. Saswata is also recognized for his roles in Jagga Jasoos, Dil Bechara, and acclaimed OTT series including The Night Manager (Disney+Hotstar), Tooth Pari (Netflix), and Bengali thrillers like Kaantaye Kaantaye and Abar Proloy. In 2024, he starred in Jamalaye Jibonto Bhanu, portraying legendary comedian Bhanu Bandopadhyay after a striking resemblance was noted by Bandopadhyay’s family. Off-screen, Saswata lives in Kolkata with his wife Mohua, a teacher, and their daughter Hiya. Known for his grounded personality, he remains deeply connected to theatre, selective about roles, and passionate about fitness and authenticity .
