He comes from a prominent acting family; his mother was Academy Award-winning actress Patty Duke, and his adoptive father was acclaimed actor John Astin. His brother, Mackenzie Astin, is also an actor.Astin's career began at a young age. His debut was in the 1981 television movie "Please Don't Hit Me, Mom," where he played a child with an abusive mother, portrayed by his real-life mother. He achieved early widespread recognition for his first feature film role as the determined and adventurous Mikey Walsh in Steven Spielberg's classic "The Goonies" (1985).Throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s, Astin continued to build his filmography with roles in movies like "The War of the Roses" (1989), "Memphis Belle" (1990), "Toy Soldiers" (1991), and "Encino Man" (1992).
