Sean Ellis
Sean Ellis is a British film director, writer, producer, and fashion photographer born in Brighton, England, in 1970. He began his career as a photographer, moving to London in 1994, where he became a sought-after fashion photographer known for his "cinematic" style, working for magazines like Vogue and i-D and directing commercials. Ellis transitioned to filmmaking, starting with short films such as Left Turn (2001) and Cashback (2004), the latter of which was nominated for a 2006 Academy Award for Best Short Film, Live Action, and won the top prize at over fifteen international film festivals. He expanded Cashback into his first feature film in 2006, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. His subsequent features include the psychological thriller The Broken (2008) and the Tagalog-language crime thriller Metro Manila (2013), which won the World Cinema Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for a BAFTA. Metro Manila also earned Ellis the British Independent Film Award for Best Director and Best British Independent Film. He also directed Anthropoid (2016) and The Cursed (2021), and his latest film is The Cut (2024). Ellis often takes on multiple roles in his films, including cinematographer.
