Sharlto Copley
Sharlto Copley is a South African actor, producer, and director, born on November 27, 1973, in Johannesburg. He is best known for his breakout role as Wikus van der Merwe in the 2009 science fiction film District 9, directed by Neill Blomkamp. Copley's performance in the film earned critical acclaim and established him as a prominent figure in the science fiction genre. Prior to his acting career, Copley was involved in the South African television industry, where he became the country's youngest television producer at the age of 25. During this time, he met Blomkamp, who would later cast him in several of his films. Following District 9, Copley portrayed H.M. "Howling Mad" Murdock in the 2010 film adaptation of The A-Team. Copley continued his collaboration with Blomkamp in the 2013 film Elysium, where he played the role of Kruger, a ruthless enforcer. He also starred in Chappie (2015), portraying the titular robot, and in Hardcore Henry (2015), where he played the character Jimmy. In addition to his film work, Copley has appeared in television series such as Powers (2015–2016), where he played Christian Walker, and had recurring roles in Russian Doll (2022) and Curb Your Enthusiasm (2024). Copley is married to South African actress and supermodel Tanit Phoenix, and they have a daughter together. The couple resides in both Cape Town and Los Angeles.
