Shay Mitchell, born Shannon Ashley Garcia Mitchell on April 10, 1987, in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, is a multifaceted Canadian actress and entrepreneur who has garnered international recognition for her work in television and film. Of Scottish, Irish, and Filipino descent, Mitchell showed an early interest in the performing arts, beginning dance lessons at the age of five and later competing with various dance schools. At ten, her family relocated to West Vancouver, British Columbia, where she was scouted by an international modeling agency. This led to successful modeling stints in cities like Bangkok, Hong Kong, and Barcelona during her late teens. However, her passion for acting led her back to Toronto to pursue formal studies.Mitchell's acting career began in 2009 with a role in the Canadian teen drama series "Degrassi: The Next Generation," followed by guest appearances in "Rookie Blue" and a recurring role in the Disney XD series "Aaron Stone." Her breakthrough came in 2010 when she was cast as Emily Fields, one of the lead characters in the Freeform (formerly ABC Family) mystery thriller drama series "Pretty Little Liars." This role propelled her to teen stardom and earned her nominations for a People's Choice Award and six Teen Choice Awards. During her time on "Pretty Little Liars," which ran until 2017, Mitchell also ventured into film, making her feature debut in the musical drama "Dreamland" (2016) and appearing in the comedy "Mother's Day" (2016). In 2018, she headlined the horror film "The Possession of Hannah Grace," playing the role of Megan Reed.Following the conclusion of "Pretty Little Liars," Mitchell continued to expand her acting portfolio, taking on the recurring role of socialite Peach Salinger in the Lifetime psychological thriller series "You" (2018) and starring as Stella Cole in the Hulu comedy series "Dollface" (2019-2022). She also lent her voice to the Netflix animated series "Trese" (2021-present). Beyond acting, Mitchell has demonstrated her entrepreneurial spirit by co-founding her production company, Amore & Vita Inc., in 2018 and launching her travel lifestyle brand, BÉIS, in the same year. She also co-authored the young adult novel "Bliss" in 2015. Recognized for her style and media presence, Esquire magazine named her the "Sexiest Woman Alive" in 2014, and she appeared on the Maxim Hot 100 list in 2015. Mitchell is also involved in philanthropic work, supporting organizations such as The Trevor Project and the NOH8 Campaign.
