Born on April 16, 1976, in New Taipei City, Taiwan, Shu Qi (born Lin Li-hui) is a world-renowned actress and filmmaker whose career is defined by a successful transition from early softcore modeling to becoming one of the most respected figures in global art-house cinema. Moving to Hong Kong at age 17, she achieved her professional breakthrough in Derek Yee’s Viva Erotica (1996), winning both Best Supporting Actress and Best New Performer at the Hong Kong Film Awards. This early success caught the attention of Taiwanese auteur Hou Hsiao-hsien, sparking a legendary creative partnership that produced critically acclaimed works such as Millennium Mambo (2001), Three Times (2005)—for which she won the Golden Horse Award for Best Actress—and the wuxia masterpiece The Assassin (2015). Her versatility has allowed her to balance prestigious festival films with major commercial hits like The Transporter (2002), If You Are the One (2008), and Stephen Chow’s Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons (2013), making her one of the highest-paid and most influential actresses in Asia. In Bi Gan’s 2025 science fiction epic Resurrection, Shu Qi stars as Miss Shu (also known as the "Big Other"), a high-ranking hunter in a dystopian future where humanity has lost the ability to dream. Her character serves as the emotional and philosophical anchor of the film, as she uses her unique ability to perceive illusions to enter and interpret the cinematic dreams of an inhuman creature played by Jackson Yee. This role marks a significant chapter in her "year of the resurrection," as she also recently made her directorial debut with the film Girl and starred in the 2025 Netflix revenge drama The Resurrected. A frequent presence on international festival juries at Cannes, Berlin, and Venice, Shu Qi was invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2024, further solidifying her status as a global cinematic icon.
