Simu Liu

Simu Liu is a Canadian actor, author, and producer who rose to global fame for his leading roles that shattered cultural barriers in Hollywood. Born on April 19, 1989, in Harbin, China, Liu and his family immigrated to Canada when he was five. After a brief career in finance as an accountant, he was laid off and decided to pursue acting and stunt work, working as an extra in films like Pacific Rim and as a stock photo model. His breakout role came on television as Jung Kim in the popular CBC sitcom Kim's Convenience (2016–2021), which became an international hit on Netflix. Liu achieved worldwide recognition and made history in 2021 by starring as the titular character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, becoming the first actor of East Asian descent to headline an MCU film. Following this success, he played one of the Kens in Greta Gerwig's blockbuster film Barbie (2023), further showcasing his range in comedy. Beyond acting, Liu is an author, having released the memoir We Were Dreamers: An Immigrant Superhero Origin Story in 2022, which details his life, his family's immigrant experience, and their eventual reconciliation. He continues to be a strong advocate for Asian representation in the entertainment industry and will reprise his Marvel role in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday (2026).
