David Adkins (born November 10, 1956), widely known by his stage name Sinbad, is an American stand-up comedian and actor renowned for his clean, family-friendly humor and energetic stage presence. Born in Benton Harbor, Michigan, he is the son of a Baptist minister and pursued his education at the University of Denver, where he also played basketball. Before his comedy career took off, Sinbad served in the U.S. Air Force.Sinbad rose to prominence in the 1990s through his numerous HBO comedy specials, which showcased his observational comedy and charismatic style. He transitioned successfully into television, notably as Coach Walter Oakes in the popular sitcom "A Different World" (1987–1991), and later starred in his own show, "The Sinbad Show" (1993–1994). His film credits include roles in family-friendly movies like "Houseguest" (1995), "First Kid" (1996), and "Jingle All the Way" (1996), as well as appearances in "Coneheads" (1993) and "Good Burger" (1997). He has also hosted "Showtime at the Apollo."In October 2020, Sinbad suffered an ischemic stroke, which significantly impacted his health and required extensive rehabilitation. His family has openly shared updates on his recovery journey, revealing that he was on a ventilator and in a medically induced coma, with a survival chance of only about 30%. Despite the challenges, his family has reported remarkable progress, with him learning to walk again and making his first public appearances, including a virtual participation in "A Different World" tour events and even a return to the comedy stage for a tribute show in May 2024.
