Sky Ferreira

Born on July 8, 1992, in Venice, Los Angeles, Sky Ferreira is an American singer, songwriter, model, and actress who has become a defining figure of the "indie sleaze" aesthetic. Of Native American, Brazilian, and Portuguese descent, she was largely raised by her grandmother, who served as Michael Jackson’s personal hairstylist for over thirty years. Ferreira’s career began in her mid-teens when she started uploading self-written songs to MySpace, leading to a recording contract with Parlophone at age 15. While her early music was characterized by polished dance-pop singles like "One" and "Obsession," she eventually fought for creative control, transitioning into a grittier, experimental sound. Her debut studio album, Night Time, My Time (2013), was released to widespread critical acclaim, featuring the standout track "Everything Is Embarrassing" and establishing her as a pioneer of modern synth-pop and indie rock. In the world of film, Ferreira made her feature debut in the indie drama Putty Hill (2010), but gained significant attention for her role in Eli Roth’s The Green Inferno (2013). She played Kaycee, the cynical and skeptical best friend of the protagonist Justine, providing a grounded, sharp-tongued contrast to the idealistic student activists. Her filmography has since grown to include notable appearances in the third season of David Lynch's Twin Peaks (2017), Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver (2017), and the black metal biopic Lords of Chaos (2018). Known for her selective approach to roles, she has often portrayed edgy or complex characters that mirror the moody, rebellious persona of her musical career. Despite her success, Ferreira’s career has been famously marked by long hiatuses and public disputes with record labels, leading to a decade-long wait for her sophomore album, Masochism. However, she has remained a consistent cultural icon through high-profile modeling campaigns for brands like Calvin Klein, Adidas, and Redken. In late 2024, she released the shoegaze-inflected single "Leash" as part of the soundtrack for the film Babygirl, and as of January 2026, she has officially announced that Masochism is slated for release later this year. She continues to maintain a fervent cult following, bridging the gap between mainstream pop and underground indie culture.
