Sonequa Martin-Green is an American actress and producer, acclaimed for her roles in The Walking Dead and Star Trek: Discovery. Born on March 21, 1985, in Russellville, Alabama, she pursued a degree in theatre from the University of Alabama, graduating in 2007. Initially aspiring to be a psychologist, Martin-Green discovered her passion for acting during high school, leading her to a successful career in television and film. She gained widespread recognition for portraying Sasha Williams on The Walking Dead from 2012 to 2017. In 2017, she made history as the first Black woman to lead a Star Trek series, playing Michael Burnham in Star Trek: Discovery. Her performance earned her multiple Saturn Awards, including Best Actress in a Streaming Presentation in 2019 . In 2024, Martin-Green starred in the film My Dead Friend Zoe, portraying an Army veteran with PTSD. Despite her extensive experience, she experienced imposter syndrome during filming but overcame it with support from her director and co-stars, including Morgan Freeman and Ed Harris. Beyond acting, Martin-Green is involved in various philanthropic endeavors, particularly in cancer advocacy, inspired by her family's experiences with the disease .
