Sophie Hyde
Sophie Hyde, born in Adelaide, South Australia, in 1977, is an acclaimed Australian film director, writer, and producer. She co-founded Closer Productions, a film collective based in Adelaide, and is known for creating provocative and intimate fiction and documentary films. Hyde's education included studying acting at the Unley Youth Theatre in her teenage years, followed by film and theatre studies at Flinders University and a Bachelor of Arts from La Trobe University in 1998.Her notable works include the award-winning debut feature drama 52 Tuesdays (2014), which she directed, produced, and co-wrote, earning the Directing Award for World Cinema at the Sundance Film Festival and the Crystal Bear for Best Film at the Berlin Film Festival. She also directed and produced the feature comedy Animals (2019) and the critically acclaimed Good Luck to You, Leo Grande (2022), starring Emma Thompson. Hyde's television work includes creating, producing, and directing the mini-series F**king Adelaide (2017) for ABC Australia and directing The Hunting (2019) for SBS. Her documentary work includes co-directing and producing Life in Movement (2011), which won the Australian Documentary Prize, and producing Shut Up Little Man! An Audio Misadventure (2011) and Sam Klemke's Time Machine (2015), both of which premiered at Sundance. Hyde is also a producer and executive producer on various projects, supporting other filmmakers, and her upcoming film Jimpa is set for release in 2025. She has received numerous awards and nominations for her work, including from the British Independent Film Awards, Australian Directors Guild Awards, and AACTA Awards.
