Stanislas Merhar (born January 23, 1971, in Paris) is a critically acclaimed French actor known for his elegant intensity and frequent collaborations with auteurs of European cinema. He began his artistic training as a classical pianist before shifting to acting, gaining immediate recognition for his role in Dry Cleaning (1997), which earned him the César Award for Most Promising Actor in 1998. Merhar quickly became a prominent figure in French and international art-house cinema, working with directors such as Manoel de Oliveira, Anne Fontaine, Benoît Jacquot, and Chantal Akerman. His performances in films like The Captive, Adolphe, and Almayer’s Folly showcase his quiet charisma and deep emotional range.
