Stephen Merchant

Stephen Merchant is a highly acclaimed English comedian, writer, director, and actor, famous for his collaborative work with Ricky Gervais and for his own successful projects. Born on November 24, 1974, in Bristol, Merchant's career took off after co-creating, co-writing, and co-directing the groundbreaking UK mockumentary series The Office (2001–2003), which became a global phenomenon and was later adapted into the highly successful US version. His partnership with Gervais continued with the celebrated comedy series Extras (2005–2007), where Merchant also co-starred as the incompetent and hilarious agent, Darren Lamb, earning him a British Comedy Award. Along with Gervais and Karl Pilkington, he co-hosted The Ricky Gervais Show in its award-winning radio, podcast, and animated television formats, and co-developed the travel documentary series An Idiot Abroad. Venturing into solo work, Merchant wrote, directed, and starred in the HBO series Hello Ladies (2013–2014), based on his stand-up comedy material. He has also established a successful film career, writing and directing the critically praised movie Fighting with My Family (2019) and taking on dramatic roles, such as the mutant Caliban in Logan (2017) and the chilling portrayal of serial killer Stephen Port in the BBC drama Four Lives (2022). More recently, he created, co-wrote, directed, and starred in the hit comedy-crime series The Outlaws (2021–present), set in his hometown of Bristol.
