Sudha Kongara Prasad

Sudha Kongara Prasad (born March 29, 1971) is a highly acclaimed Indian film director and screenwriter predominantly known for her work in Tamil cinema. Born in Vijayawada and raised in Chennai, she studied History and Mass Communication at Women's Christian College. Her cinematic journey began in 2002 as a screenwriter for the English film Mitr, My Friend, followed by a seven-year stint as an associate director under the legendary Mani Ratnam. She made her directorial debut with the Tamil film Drohi (2010), but achieved widespread national recognition with the bilingual sports drama Irudhi Suttru (2016) and its Telugu remake Guru (2017). Her career reached new heights with the biographical drama Soorarai Pottru (2020), which won five National Film Awards, including Best Feature Film and Best Screenplay for her. In 2024, she directed the Hindi remake Sarfira starring Akshay Kumar, and she is currently gearing up for her most ambitious project to date, the period political drama Parasakthi (2026). Known for her meticulous research and focus on gritty, inspirational underdog stories, Sudha Kongara has established herself as one of the few female directors in India leading massive big-budget productions. Her upcoming 2026 film Parasakthi is set against the 1965 anti-Hindi agitations and features a star-studded cast including Sivakarthikeyan and Jayam Ravi. In her personal life, she is the mother of a daughter, Uttra. Throughout her career, she has been honored with multiple Filmfare Awards South and SIIMA Awards, cementing her reputation as a filmmaker who successfully bridges the gap between critical acclaim and commercial success.
