Sul Kyung-gu

Sul Kyung-gu (born May 14, 1967) is one of South Korea's most respected and celebrated actors, often cited as a leading figure in the resurgence of Korean cinema in the 2000s alongside contemporaries like Song Kang-ho and Choi Min-sik. After studying Theater and Film at Hanyang University, he built his foundational career in theatrical productions throughout the 1990s, notably starring in the hit Korean rock musical Subway Line 1. His cinematic breakthrough came with a leading role in director Lee Chang-dong's critically acclaimed film, Peppermint Candy (1999), for which he won Best Actor at the Blue Dragon Film Awards, marking the start of a storied career.He is renowned for his versatility and intense, transformative performances across genres, earning him the nickname "Mr. Fluctuating Weight" for his dedication to altering his physique for roles. Some of his most iconic and successful films include the gritty crime thriller Public Enemy (2002) and its sequels, the deeply moving melodrama Oasis (2002), and the massive box-office hit Silmido (2003), which became the highest-grossing film in South Korea at the time. More recently, he has continued to garner praise and awards for roles in films like the emotional family drama Hope (2013), the crime noir The Merciless (2017), and the political drama Kingmaker (2022). Sul Kyung-gu's career is defined by his willingness to take on complex, challenging characters, solidifying his status as a pillar of Korean film. He is married to actress Song Yoon-ah.
